Tarun studies in class five. His teacher has given a task to the students of his class. He has told them to write a paragraph on the Taj Mahal. But Tarun does not know much about the Taj Mahal. He only knows that it is a beautiful monument situated in Agra.
তরুণ পঞ্চম শ্রেণিতে পড়ে। তার শিক্ষক তার ক্লাসের ছাত্রদের একটি কাজ দিয়েছেন। তিনি তাদের তাজমহল সম্পর্কে একটি অনুচ্ছেদ লেখার জন্য বলেছেন। কিন্তু তরুণ তাজমহল সম্পর্কে বেশি কিছু জানে না। সে শুধু জানে যে এটি আগ্রায় অবস্থিত একটি সুন্দর স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ।
Worried, he came back home in the evening and asked his grandfather:
চিন্তিত হয়ে সে সন্ধ্যায় বাড়ি ফিরে এসে তার দাদুকে জিজ্ঞাসা করল:
“Grandfather, can you tell me something about Taj Mahal?”
“দাদু, আপনি কি আমাকে তাজমহল সম্পর্কে কিছু বলতে পারেন?”
Tarun’s grandfather was a retired teacher. He knew a lot about this beautiful monument. He smiled and said,
তরুণের দাদু একজন অবসরপ্রাপ্ত শিক্ষক ছিলেন। তিনি এই সুন্দর স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ সম্পর্কে অনেক কিছু জানতেন। তিনি হাসলেন এবং বললেন,
“Ok. If you promise to be a good boy, I will tell you many things about the Taj.”
“ঠিক আছে। যদি তুমি ভালো ছেলে হওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দাও, তাহলে আমি তোমাকে তাজমহল সম্পর্কে অনেক কিছু বলব।”
Tarun promised not to be naughty. So, his grandfather began to tell him the story of Taj Mahal.
তরুণ দুষ্টুমি না করার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিল। তখন তার দাদু তাজমহলের গল্প বলা শুরু করলেন।
“Once upon a time, there lived a prince named Khurram.
একদিন, খুররম নামে এক রাজপুত্র ছিলেন।
He was the son of Jahangir, and the grandson of Akbar the Great.
তিনি ছিলেন জাহাঙ্গীরের পুত্র এবং মহামতি আকবরের নাতি।
One day, Khurram went to the Meena Bazaar with his friends. There he caught a glimpse of an extremely beautiful girl who was selling silk and glass beads.
একদিন, খুররম তার বন্ধুদের সাথে মীনা বাজারে গিয়েছিলেন। সেখানে তিনি এক অসাধারণ সুন্দরী মেয়েকে দেখলেন, যে রেশম ও কাচের মালা বিক্রি করছিল।
The girl was Arjumand Banu Begum. She was born in a family of Persian nobility.
মেয়েটির নাম ছিল অর্জুমান্দ বানু বেগম। তিনি পারস্যের এক সম্ভ্রান্ত পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন।
After meeting her, Khurram went back to his father and said that he wanted to marry her.
তাকে দেখার পর, খুররম তার বাবার কাছে গিয়ে বললেন যে তিনি তাকে বিয়ে করতে চান।
Khurram married Arjumand Banu Begum in 1612, five years after their first meeting.
খুররম প্রথমবার দেখা হওয়ার পাঁচ বছর পরে, ১৬১২ সালে অর্জুমান্দ বানু বেগমকে বিয়ে করেন।
At this point, Tarun stopped his grandfather:
এই সময় তরুণ তার দাদুকে থামিয়ে দিল:
“But, grandfather, I don’t want to hear the story of Prince Khurram. I want to know about the Taj Mahal.”
“কিন্তু, দাদু, আমি রাজপুত্র খুররমের গল্প শুনতে চাই না। আমি তাজমহল সম্পর্কে জানতে চাই।”
“Be patient, Tarun. Let me finish the whole story,” said his grandfather.
“ধৈর্য ধরো, তরুণ। আমাকে পুরো গল্প শেষ করতে দাও,” বললেন তার দাদু।
“All right,” said Tarun.
“ঠিক আছে,” বলল তরুণ।
His grandfather continued with the story.
তার দাদু গল্প বলা চালিয়ে গেলেন।
“Prince Khurram was later known as Shah Jahan.
রাজপুত্র খুররম পরে শাহজাহান নামে পরিচিত হন।
He became the emperor in the year 1628.
তিনি ১৬২৮ সালে সম্রাট হন।
Arjumand Banu Begum was later renamed as Mumtaz Mahal.
অর্জুমান্দ বানু বেগম পরে মুমতাজ মহল নামে পরিচিত হন।
“But what does the name Mumtaz Mahal mean?” asked Tarun.
“কিন্তু মুমতাজ মহল নামের অর্থ কী?” তরুণ জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
“It means the brightest crown of the world,” answered his grandfather.
“এর অর্থ হলো পৃথিবীর উজ্জ্বলতম মুকুট,” তার দাদু উত্তর দিলেন।
Then he continued with his tale,
তখন তিনি তার গল্প চালিয়ে গেলেন,
“When Mumtaz was on her deathbed, Shah Jahan promised her that he would not marry again. He also promised her that he would build the most beautiful mausoleum over her grave.”
“যখন মুমতাজ মৃত্যুশয্যায় ছিলেন, তখন শাহজাহান তাকে প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন যে তিনি আর কখনও বিয়ে করবেন না। তিনি আরও প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন যে তিনি তার সমাধির ওপর সবচেয়ে সুন্দর এক স্মৃতিসৌধ নির্মাণ করবেন।”
“What is a mausoleum, grandfather?” asked Tarun in surprise.
“মৌসোলিয়াম কী, দাদু?” বিস্মিত হয়ে তরুণ জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
“Oh! A mausoleum is a building built to house the dead,” said grandfather.
“ওহ! মৌসোলিয়াম হল মৃতদের জন্য নির্মিত একটি ভবন,” দাদু বললেন।
According to legends, Shah Jahan was so sad after her death that he ordered the court to mourn for two years.
কথিত আছে, মুমতাজের মৃত্যুর পর শাহজাহান এতটাই শোকে ডুবে গিয়েছিলেন যে তিনি দরবারকে দুই বছর শোক পালন করতে বলেছিলেন।
Later, Shah Jahan started to build the world’s most beautiful monument beside the Yamuna River in memory of his beloved wife.
পরে, শাহজাহান তার প্রিয় স্ত্রীর স্মরণে যমুনা নদীর তীরে বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে সুন্দর স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ তৈরি করতে শুরু করেন।
It took 22 years and 22,000 workers to build the monument.
এই স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ নির্মাণ করতে ২২ বছর এবং ২২,০০০ শ্রমিকের পরিশ্রম লেগেছিল।
The Taj Mahal was built entirely out of white marble.
তাজমহল সম্পূর্ণরূপে সাদা মার্বেল পাথর দিয়ে তৈরি।
When Shah Jahan died in 1666, his body was placed next to the grave of Mumtaz Mahal.
শাহজাহান ১৬৬৬ সালে মারা গেলে, তার দেহ মুমতাজ মহলের কবরের পাশে রাখা হয়।
This magnificent monument came to be known as the Taj Mahal.
এই মহিমান্বিত স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ ‘তাজমহল’ নামে পরিচিত হয়।
It is now considered to be one among the seven wonders of the world.
এটি এখন বিশ্বের সাতটি আশ্চর্যের মধ্যে একটি হিসেবে গণ্য করা হয়।

The Taj Mahal is one of the greatest wonders of the world. It is a wonderful specimen of architecture. A monument like this is rare to find. I am proud to be an Indian.
ACTIVITY 7: Write five sentences about a place of interest you have visited.

(2) I went there with my family during a vacation.
(3) I saw the beautiful architecture and learned about its history.
(4) The fort was huge, and we explored its many rooms and courtyards.
(5) It was an unforgettable experience that I enjoyed very much.

(1) My school is about 2 kilometers away from my home.
(2) I usually travel by bus, but sometimes I walk if the weather is nice.

ACTIVITY 9: Route Map
Draw a route map of your journey from your home to school. Include landmarks such as parks, markets, bridges, and main roads. This map can be drawn on paper or chart and colored for presentation.

The Taj Mahal is a famous monument. There are many such beautiful monuments in India, for example:
- The Red Fort in Delhi,
- The Victoria Memorial in Kolkata,
- The Charminar in Hyderabad, and many more.
Draw as many pictures of such buildings as you can on a chart paper and make a poster. Use color pencils to color your poster. Your teacher will help you.
