Once upon a time there lived a monkey on the bank of a river.
(এক সময় একটি বানর একটি নদীর তীরে বাস করত।)

Right in the middle of the river there was a small island with many fruit trees.
(নদীর মাঝখানে একটি ছোট দ্বীপ ছিল, যেখানে অনেক ফলের গাছ ছিল।)

Sweet and juicy fruits grew on the trees.

At a distance from the bank, there was a huge rock in the river. A part of it was above water.

One day, attracted by the delicious fruits, the monkey jumped to reach the rock and from there leapt onto the island.

“Not so difficult, after all,” he said to himself.

Soon he was enjoying the sweet fruits from the trees.
(শিগগিরই সে গাছের মিষ্টি ফল উপভোগ করতে লাগল।)

There was hardly any other animal there, so he was in no danger.

Hence, the monkey decided to visit the island every day.

On the far bank of the river a big crocodile lived with his wife.

He told his wife, “Did you see him? Let’s catch him tomorrow.”

Next morning, however, the crocodile found that catching the monkey was not easy.

The monkey landed on the rock and in a flash jumped off onto the island.

Hiding behind the rock, the crocodile could only watch him.

Days went by. The crocodile thought of many plans to catch the monkey, but nothing worked.

The monkey always escaped from his clutches.

One day his wife said, “You’ve failed to catch the monkey, but I really want to taste his sweet flesh. So, this time, you must follow my plan.”

The crocodile said, “Right, tell me the plan then.”
(কুমিরটি বলল, “ঠিক আছে, তবে পরিকল্পনাটা বলো।”)

“The monkey jumps on that big rock in the river,” said the wife, “You must lie still on the rock. When he jumps upon you, thinking you to be a rock, you can catch him easily then!”
(স্ত্রী বলল, “বানরটি নদীর মাঝের ওই বড় পাথরে লাফ দেয়। তুমি সেই পাথরের ওপর চুপচাপ শুয়ে থাকবে। সে তোমাকে পাথর ভেবে লাফ দেবে, তখনই তুমি সহজেই তাকে ধরতে পারবে!”)

“What an idea! I’ll get him tomorrow for sure,” said the crocodile with joy.
(“কি দারুণ ভাবনা! আমি কালই তাকে ধরব,” আনন্দের সঙ্গে বলল কুমিরটি।)

Next morning, as usual, the monkey jumped onto the rock and landed on the river island.
(পরদিন সকালে, যথারীতি, বানরটি পাথরের ওপর লাফ দিয়ে দ্বীপে চলে গেল।)

Seeing this, the crocodile swam to the rock.
(এটি দেখে কুমিরটি পাথরের দিকে সাঁতরে গেল।)

He lay still on the rock, keeping his head and tail well under water.
(সে পাথরের ওপর চুপচাপ শুয়ে পড়ল, তার মাথা ও লেজ পানির নিচে রাখল।)

Only his back was above water and it looked like a part of the rock.

After having a good meal, the monkey decided to return.

He looked at the rock.

“Strange! The rock has become so large!” he thought.

“It wasn’t so big when I came here. Possibly that crocodile is playing a trick again. He’s lying there, pretending to be a rock.”
(“আমি আসার সময় এটা এত বড় ছিল না। সম্ভবত সেই কুমিরটি আবার কোনো চাল চালাচ্ছে। সে ওখানে শুয়ে আছে, নিজেকে পাথর সাজিয়ে।” )

The monkey made up his mind very quickly.
(বানরটি দ্রুত সিদ্ধান্ত নিল।)

He shouted, “Hello, Rock! My dear friend! You look quite big today. And you didn’t welcome me today as you always do. Are you angry with me?”
(সে চিৎকার করে বলল, “ও রক! আমার প্রিয় বন্ধু! আজ তুমি বেশ বড় দেখাচ্ছো। আর তুমি আজ আমাকে স্বাগত জানালে না, যেমন তুমি সব সময় করো। তুমি কি আমার উপর রাগ করেছ?”)

Hearing him, the crocodile thought:

“Perhaps this rock really talks to the monkey. I should speak to him posing as the rock, otherwise he might suspect something.”
(“সম্ভবত এই পাথর সত্যিই বানরের সঙ্গে কথা বলে। আমাকেও রকের মতো কথা বলতে হবে, না হলে সে সন্দেহ করবে।”)

So he said, “No, no, my friend. You’re always welcome.”
(তাই সে বলল, “না না, বন্ধু। তুমি সবসময়ই স্বাগত।” )

“If you aren’t angry, why are you looking so different?” said the monkey.
(“তুমি যদি রাগ না করে থাকো, তাহলে আজ এত আলাদা দেখাচ্ছে কেন?” বানর বলল।)

At this, the crocodile got impatient.
(এতে কুমিরটি অধৈর্য হয়ে উঠল।)

He raised his head above water and said, “I’m not a rock, you stupid! I’m a crocodile. I’m going to eat you up very soon.”
(সে তার মাথা পানির ওপরে তুলে বলল, “আমি পাথর নই, তুমি বোকার হদ্দ! আমি এক কুমির। আমি শিগগিরই তোমাকে খেয়ে ফেলব।”)

The monkey realized that he could not return home like all other days.
(বানরটি বুঝল যে আজ সে আগের মতো করে ফিরে যেতে পারবে না।)

So he made another plan.

He said, “My friend, crocodile, I am so sorry. Why did you do all this to catch me? Just open your mouth wide. I’ll jump straight into your mouth.”

The monkey had observed earlier that whenever the crocodile opened his mouth, his eyes would shut completely.

But the crocodile did not know this.

He was happy at the monkey’s suggestion.

He raised himself on the rock with his mouth wide open, and his eyes closed.

The clever monkey leapt on the crocodile’s head and then quickly jumped back to the river bank.

From the safety of his home upon a riverside tree, the monkey laughed at the crocodile and said,

এক সময় এক বানর নদীর তীরে বাস করত। নদীর ঠিক মাঝখানে ছিল একটি ছোট দ্বীপ, যেখানে অনেক ফলের গাছ ছিল। সেই গাছগুলিতে সুস্বাদু ও রসালো ফল জন্মাত। তীরে থেকে কিছুটা দূরে নদীতে ছিল একটি বড় পাথর। তার কিছু অংশ জলের ওপরে ছিল। একদিন, সুস্বাদু ফল দেখে আকৃষ্ট হয়ে বানরটি সেই পাথরের উপর লাফিয়ে পড়ল এবং সেখান থেকে দ্বীপে লাফ দিল।

“আরে! অত কঠিন তো নয়,” নিজেই বলল সে। খুব তাড়াতাড়ি সে গাছের মিষ্টি ফল উপভোগ করতে লাগল। সেখানে প্রায় কোনো পশু ছিল না, তাই কোনো বিপদের আশঙ্কাও ছিল না। তাই বানরটি প্রতিদিন দ্বীপে যাওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিল।

নদীর অন্য পারে এক বড় কুমির তার স্ত্রীর সঙ্গে বাস করত। একদিন সে বানরটিকে নদী পার হতে দেখে বলল, “তুমি দেখেছো ওকে? কাল ওকে ধরি।”
কিন্তু পরদিন কুমির বুঝল, বানরটিকে ধরা মোটেও সহজ নয়। বানরটি ঝটপট পাথরে নামল এবং সঙ্গে সঙ্গে দ্বীপে লাফিয়ে পড়ল। পাথরের পিছনে লুকিয়ে থাকা কুমিরটি শুধুই তাকিয়ে থাকতে পারল। খালি হাতে ফিরে যেতে হল।

দিন কাটতে লাগল। কুমির অনেক উপায় ভেবেছিল, কিন্তু কিছুতেই কাজ হচ্ছিল না। বানরটি সব সময়ই তার হাতছাড়া হয়ে যেত। একদিন তার স্ত্রী বলল, “তুমি বানরটিকে ধরতে পারোনি, কিন্তু আমি সত্যি তার মাংস খেতে চাই। এবার আমার কথামতো কাজ করো।” কুমির বলল, “ঠিক আছে, বলো তাহলে।”

স্ত্রী বলল, “বানরটি সেই বড় পাথরে লাফ দেয়। তুমি সেই পাথরের মতো চুপচাপ পড়ে থাকবে। যখন সে ভাববে তুমি পাথর, তখন তোমার উপর লাফ দেবে – আর তখনই তুমি ওকে ধরতে পারবে।”
