Indroduction to Basic Nutrition:

Good nutrition promotes body and mind. It also aids resistance to illness. When we eat a proper diet, our energy and vitality are increased. The right foods speed the healing process and healp the individual to fell better and to sleep better. It is important that the health care worker understand about and their effect of the body.

This chapter wilrdeal with the following:
• Nutrition
• protein energy malnutrition
• Assessment of Nutrition staus
• Food Brone disease
• National Nutrition programmes in India

The term food refers to anything which nourishes the body. Food can be soulids, semi- solids and liquid, which can be consumed and which help sustain body and keep it healthy

Classfication of food :

Food may be classified in many ways.

1) Classfication by Origin:
a) Animal origin
b) Vegetable origin
2) Classfication by chemical Composition:
a) Proteins
b) Fats
c) Carbohydrate
d) Vitamins
e) Minerals
3) Classfication by function:
a) Body- Building:

e.g., Milk,Meat, poultry, Fish, eggs,pulse, groundnuts etc.

b) Nergy giving foods:

e.g., cerals, Sugar, Roots & Tuber, Fats & oils.

C) protective Foods:

e.g., vegetable, Fruits, Milk.

Four Basic Food Groups

In order to have all the Nutrition that are needed to maintain goods health. it is necessary to eat properly. If the suggested protions are eaten from group everyday, you will will have a healthy diet that meets the body’s Nutrition needs.

Group 1: Dairy products Group:
Provides:

protein, calcium, fat, carbohydrate, Phophors, vitamin A, riboflavin, and niacin

Includes:

Milk, ice cream, Cheese, and other milk products

Group 2 :

Vegetable and Fruits Group

Provides:

vitamin A and C, vitamin A,E,K,B complex, iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, sugar, and cellulose

Includes:

All vegetable and Fruits; citrus fruits and tomatoes

Group 3 :

Bread and Cereal Group

Provides:

carbohydrate, thiamine, niacin, B6, iron, phosphorus, magnesium.

Includes:

Bread, rolls, commeal, noodles, spaghetti, macaroni

Group 4 :

Meat Group

Provides:

proteins, some fat, iron, cropper, sodium, potassium, Chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, Vitamin A,B- complex

Includes:

Beef, lamb, veal, pork, organ meats, poultry, fish, Iunchmeat, eggs, dried beans, dried peas, nuts, and soybens.

SUMMARY:

Foods has four functions that help kepp the body  strong and healthy. A balanced diet is essential for maintaining Health and stamina. Every one needs certain basic nutritents in their diet. When you plan your daily meals using the guidelines in the four basic group, you will meet body’s nutrition needs and help to maintain goods health

Nutritents are organic & inorganic complex contained in food . Most natural foods contain more than one nutrient . The body needs each nutritents in specific amounts. Some are needed in relatively larger amounts ( the macronutrients) and some in smaller amounts ( the micronutrients) but they are all equally essential four health.

These are proteins, fats& carbohydrate which are taken called ” proximate principle” as they from the maintain bulk of food.

2) Micronutrients:

These are vitamin into the body & minerals. They are caused Micronutrients because they are required work together in the body to:
